3 words. Bacon Bloody Mary. 2 words. Get Some. 1 word. Finest!

Yummy!!! I had the mole enchiladas. The mole sauce had just enough heat to make it interesting. Very tasty. My husband had the green chile Mac and cheese. A bit spicy for him, but I noticed he cleaned his plate. Our server was friendly and helpful. AND you can't beat the view of the plaza.

It was ok the guacamole was 11$ and was tiny had no flavor and needed salt. I got the tacos my BF got the fajitas both were ok, but for the price I expected better. Your paying for a view of the plaza here, the margarita was good but nothing exceptional.

Good food - fun location. Sit on the balcony, if you can! Nice views and a little quieter. Did I say that the food was good? Even our friend with lots of food allergies had choices he was happy with.

Enjoyed the view of the Plaza immensely. They wanted to seat us between a group of elderly patrons and a group of standard patrons. As the tables were pretty tight we were able to get them to seat us at the end of the patio and not really on top of anyone else. And this made for a much more leisurely lunch. I had a good burger and she had a salad with chicken, both decent.

The Thunderbird Bar and Grille has wonderful 2nd story outside eating. The stacked stone pillars inside are beautiful. Our server was very nice and attentive. My water glass was always full! A light lunch was in order. We started off with the guacamole and chips. The guac had just the right amount of diced tomato and onion. Enough to give it great flavor. There were ample chips too! I had the house salad-a mixture if greens, tomatoes, pecans and blue cheese. Just the right amount and fresh. My husband had the chicken tortilla soup. It too was yummy.

Everything we had was ah-mazing. The staff and management were extra friendly and attentive. I have been here once before in 2011 and really enjoyed it. We definitely got the friendliest waiter in the place, and the food exceeded expectations! Side note: I had the ribs ... cooked to perfection.

Stale chips, watered down margaritas, but really big tequila shots! Could be a lot better.

  • Peter D.

I'm not going to pretend that these were the best chicken nachos I've ever had,* and the same goes for the Frito Pie. But they were FAR from the worst, and they only cost $3 apiece during happy hour. Throw in $3 drafts, $5 margaritas, a balcony view overlooking the Plaza...I'd do it again. ______________ *I don't know why I would do this anyway. I only pretend food is good when it's homecooked by someone that is bigger than me, or scary for another reason (like she's my wife).

Thunderbird is your typical restaurant outside a highly touristy area; the food is good enough--not great--and slightly over-priced. If you are browsing the shops on the plaza and must eat that instant, Thunderbirds will serve you well. But if fine cuisine is what you are after, you might want to look a little harder. I split the fajitas with my wife and we both felt meh. The guacamole appetizer is not worth it. You get a basket of chips and enough guac for only about a third of them. The service was great, exceptional actually. But that's only part of the equation for making a fine eatery. As a bar, Thunderbirds rates much better. Its second floor outdoor seating overlooks the plaza and provides a great vantage for people watching if that is what your into. They also serve a massive beer-rita dubbed the 'volcano'. One of these bad boys will put your entire party in a good mood. So my recommendation: eat some where else, then come here for drinks.

I was at the Thunderbird for a late night Happy Hour in June, 2015. I had the wings and one of the local IPA special drafts for 3.00. Wings were .50 cents a piece during late happy hour too. Larry the bartender was very friendly and there were several large TV's with sports on as well. Wings came out pretty fast and were very tasty and not overcooked. I enjoyed the IPA as well, which for 3.00 was a total steal. Great location less than a five minute walk from my hotel. Nice spot in the Plaza as well you could sit on the balcony as well (I opted for the bar). If I was in the area, I'd come back again. Keep up the good work!

Located right on the plaza in Santa Fe, this restaurant's balcony has one of the best views in town. The inside (upstairs) is much more modern than the traditional outside would suggest. It has a modern sports bar feel, with lots of TVs and recessed lighting. We ate outside to enjoy the weather and the aforementioned view. Their menu has your typical New Mexican options like tacos and enchiladas, as well as burgers, salads, sandwiches, etc. I was in the mood for a green chile cheeseburger, and ordered the appropriately named "New Mexican" burger. It was pretty good! My expectations were initially low due to the really slow service and "tourist trap" location, so I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this cheeseburger. The meat was flavorful and plentiful (the hamburger patty was thick), and was cooked perfectly to order. The chile had a slow burn that got me at the end. Perfection.

I'm not often inspired to write reviews, but this place did such an excellent job catering to my needs, I felt I must. We were on the plaza fiesta weekend, starving, without a reservation anywhere. We hopefully wandered into the Thunderbird and were more than pleasantly surprised. We were seated quickly on the balcony overlooking the festivities on the plaza. Within minutes, we had water and a trio of dips with chips. The bloody mary that followed was the kind that has everything in it but the kitchen sink, amazing! Our dinners were the steak enchiladas and Santa Fe ceasar salad. Both were quite tasty, and our server, the one with intricate braids in her hair, took excellent care of us. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone hungrily wandering around downtown.

Food was exceptional, service top notch, price was very reasonable. I am a big fan. We dropped in during lunch, and were seated immediately. before you know it , the GM "Rick" introduced himself and thanked us for coming. He must have stopped by at least two more times. He was all over the place, without looking flighty. The servers were attentive, cordial, and helpful throughout. We ordered a "restaurant week special"- cheeseburger with a bowl of chili, and the fish and chips. Everything was outstanding. Maybe the best fish and chips I have ever had, and that includes Vancouver BC (on the waterfront), London, you name it. cheeseburger was cooked just right- jucy, flavorful. the chili- my wife said was better than her's and she makes killer chili. Onion rings were awesome. cucumber cole slaw was wonderful. Super beer selection- many on tap, lots of bottles and a few cans. You're bound to find something you like. Atmosphere was crisp and casual. Not overdone like some places, but a good vibe. I will be back, as it is now a favorite among many awesome restaurants. And I must point out this- in this town you could pay a lot more for food this good, but here you don't have to. I made sure to speak to Rick as we were leaving, pointing out that what he is doing is the one thing that can make or break a restaurant. Immediate, direct communication. So many think it is "their restaurant", they will run it as they see fit. Often, a bit of listening and catering to the customer will solve your problems, and make things even better. If you're not willing to listen to the people who hire you, you need to find another profession. Three cheers for Rick. Give him a raise!

Okay. Totally great location. Perched on a balcony overlooking the Santa Fe Plaza, trees lit up for summer, good saxophone wafting in with the cool mountain breeze. People out having fun. Margarita was good. Fish tacos... Not so much. In fairness wasn't totally hungry and was jonesing for one of those heart stopping green and red burritos from a hole in the wall on Burro Alley so I have to give them a pass on the tacos.

  • Kerry Y.

Pork stew was great, tostadas were healthy and filling. Girlfriend got Shrimp fajitas and loved them. We got the house margaritas. Well priced and strong. Great location, views and ambiance. Food came out fairly quick. Waiter was having a rough evening but manager was really awesome. Definitely headed back. Wonderful staff, food, ambiance and pricing.

  • Chad N.

We met friends here for a drink and light bite - it is right on the plaza and close to the action. The margaritas were good. We also had the calamari. My only concern was that there were more fried veggies in the calamari than actual calamari - this was very disappointing. Service was also a bit slow - even though the place was not packed. Overall - lackluster at best. Location is the best quality of that they have going for them.

    (2)
  • Geoff S.

Great location, great drinks. Rude hostess. About enough to make my party walk out and go elsewhere. Just based on that, I wouldn't go back. Also called the previous day to make a reservation. Only option is to leave a voice mail for a return call. No one ever called back. What restaurant does this ?! Too many other options in Santa Fe. Go elsewhere.

  • Marla L.

Great view is best thing. It overlooks Santa Fe plaza. We ordered beer and it was good. Not really really cold like we like but OK. Ordered chips with salsa and con queso and guacamole. Chips were stale. Service was good. Waitress very nice.

  • Susan O.

First of all, I will tell you that this place makes the best margarita you've ever had. They use fresh squeezed lime juice, which gives it an incredible flavor. My friend and I were traveling the country and happened upon this establishment by chance. We split the nachos, chili, and house salad. The nachos were amazing. Super spicy with delicious jalapeños and cheese. The salad was delicious, and so was the chili, although it could've been a little thicker. Our server was hilarious, and you can't beat the happy hour specials. The manager, Rick, was incredibly nice and told us about awesome places in Santa Fe we need to check out. If you're looking for a delicious dinner with great drinks, stop in! Would come back again!

  • Michelle R.

Drank margaritas and shared the trio of dips appetizers on the porch overlooking old town Sante Fe with friends. The queso dip was really tasty! I would recommend getting a full size order. And my flaca margarita was pretty good - simple recipe of only 3 ingredients, which was why I ordered it.

    (3)
  • Cindy M.

The food was okay. Nothing special. Probably will not return. We ordered the trio chip appetizer and once you eat those chips, no other chips were ever brought out.

  • Ashley H.

This place is BS. Closing an hour early on a Saturday, last call before 11pm, & stopped serving some drinks at 9:30.

    (2)
  • Cristina S.

Great place to have a burger! I had The Hangover with a patty cooked medium well topped with bacon and egg. It was very delicious with a side of my favorite kind of fries. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a quick bite while in Santa Fe. I think next time I go I'll ask for that burger topped with their green chile sauce...just a thought

  • Linda W.

Having a wonderful time here. We got in late last night from california and were exhausted! We took a walk to get a bite and we came here. We liked the service so much, we came back tonight. I did check yelp before we came to find a couple of not so good comments (I have no idea why these individuals wrote what they did) but it was comfortable and lively. We were happy to be served with kindness after a very stressful long day. The bar was also wonderful. If you are fortunate enough to be served by larry at the bar, you will be very well taken care of! He knows this town like no other and we learned a lot. Later on while we were here we were approached by mark as I believe he is the manager here. He wanted to make sure all was good and he was very nice and this makes us want to come back every night..actually, my husband who can be picky, said we are coming here every night for drinks!! This is because of the service, great food (oh the Cesar salad was awesome btw), and kindness from the staff. You can't come here and NOT experience this little quaint place on the plaza. Do yourself a favor :)

  • Becci H.

My family decided that the Thunderbird Bar & Grill served OK food. It wasnt terrible but it also wasnt the best. My dad wasnt too pleased to find all these chunks of pork fat in his nachos and I wasnt too thrilled that when I asked the waiter not to put any meat on my salad he put an anchovy on it. I wasn't as upset about the food as I was about the service towards handicapped people. There is NO elevator. There is two flights of stairs and no way for a disabled person to make it to the actual restaurant.

  • Steve S.

Great food and portions. Service was quick and friendly. If you want the patio make a reservation. Thanks for a great experience.

  • Gary M.

Stopped in for a snack and a couple of cold beers, we were seated outside overlooking the Santa Fe Plaza, could not have been better. We ordered the Margarita Shrimp which is Gulf Shrimp sautéed with butter, fresh lime, cilantro, jalapenos and tomatoes served over Fry Bread, this has to be one of the best appetizers I have ever had, the real gem of this was our server Laura, this women is a real asset to this place. Please stop in and be sure to ask for Laura.

  • Robert N.

Great views from the 2nd floor, which is where this place is located. Great selection at bar , had the fish tacos and a couple of pints. Nice atmosphere and food was great.

    (5)
  • Matt H.

Best margaritas in town. Check out the paprita - smooth and tasty with a kick. Talk to Susan for her recommendations. Ask her what the Virgo and his super hot wife ordered. Maria's has nothing on this place!

    (5)
  • Molly K.

Get the Bloody Mary! The best I've ever had. Had chicken mole enchiladas for lunch. Could have had a bit more spice but I liked it. Pretty good salsa as an appetizer.

    (4)
  • Chowda J.

DO NOT COME HERE: Got "cut off" for ordering three drinks in a two hour period without ordering enough food...sounds like a scam. From a high altitude environment (flagstaff), so no worries about altitude drunk.

    (1)
  • Kristyn R.

Good food and friendly service. The Real Margarita was fantastic- strong and smooth. Wonderful view of the plaza from the patio seating area. General manager, Rick, came by and visited with us. Thank you for that! We will definitely return.

    (5)
  • Earl M.

Great Happy Hour deals in this second floor spot overlooking Plaza. $5 margaritas, $3 specials like roast.beef. sliders, frito pie, chicken nachos. 4 to.6 PM and 8 to closing. Nice deck and interior.

    (5)
  • Tania x.

Came in for the happy hour. My sliders were delicious. The drinks were strong and well priced. This is a great place for happy hour if you're in the plaza.

    (5)
  • Keira M.

Bloody Marys with bacon in them. Heaven in a pint glass.

    (4)
  • Ada R.

Great Margaritas! Fresh made! Great Happy Hour! Our server was great! We had a rough start with the hostess not wanting to move us tables, I was very disappointed and was ready to ask for the manager, but our server Elizabet was very accommodating! She was great.

    (5)
  • Lisa C.

I had chicken fajitas. They were great! They combine dark and white meat which made for really moist chicken but my dining part did not like having dark meat. I loved the veggies and the seasoning that came with the fajitas too. One thing I didn't like...when I asked the waiter for a suggestion he said no. He said people's tastes are too varied for him to recommend anything. I guess he has had a bad experience before but I thought it was kind of rude to refuse to make a suggestion to me. I would dine here again just don't expect any suggestions from the waiter. :)

  • Fran G.

Just stopped in for an afternoon drink when we visited this Summer and enjoyed the chips and salsa so much- had to give this place 5 stars for the fresh salsa!

    (5)
  • Mark F.

The potential is never met. The house margarita $7 is weak in flavor and kick. If they take care of their base marg, you know the rest can be worth the upcharge. I'm this case, I'm not going to reorder to find out. The Chips Three Was with guacamole, salsa and queso is a good choice. Hard to describe what's better but it's tied between the green and yellow. Perfect to split with a friend as you contemplate walking across the street to the packed patio of Marble Brewery for better beverages. To say the service is lacking would give the impression there was service. Sure, I was seated by a hostess, a women poured my water and let me know who my server would be and he did show after about 5 minutes to take my simple order. Not too much time later, my bevi was as dry as the high desert air and no offer for a refill even though he passed me several times in in 15 minute period. It was it until the chips basket was empty that he paused to ask how I was doing. No one seems to want to be here. Including me. There are TVs inside at the brightly lit bar with natural light flowing in from the large windows. So this could be a decent place to watch sports and I would hope with a bartender in front of you most of the time, the service would be better. Not that I'm going to try and find out. The view and the company your bring is about the only reason to come to Thunderbird.

We were in Santa Fe looking for places for a rehearsal dinner for our November wedding. We fell in love with Thunderbird Bar and Grill! Not only is the location ideal but the staff is exceptional! The general manager was incredibly hospitable and our server, Laura, was top notch. The food was incredible and cooked exactly as ordered! The spinach cooked in a balsamic reduction was stunning. If you are looking for great food, great service, and great atmosphere, look no further than Thunderbird Bar and Grill!

    (5)
  • Whitney G.

Nice view but stingy on the tortillas we were trying to share fajitas and needed more but happy hour was nice don't do he quest great place to try once for the view

    (3)
  • Jen S.

Great location just on Governors Palace. Great views and nice watching people. My steak fajitas were beautifully presented, but the steak was tasteless and a bit tough even at medium. However, my husband's gulf shrimp pasta was excellent. Shrimp well cooked, not tough with great flavor! Kids meals were ok, but basic - sliders and chicken fingers with fries.

    (3)
  • Christopher S.

Great location, patio overlooking the plaza. The food/menu is American meets upscale - and its a bit confusing. Lots of burgers, some sandwiches, and some appetizers. This seems a bit overpriced for the quality of food that you received. But it's just okay. No complaints.

    (3)
  • Donna T.

Wish I could give this restaurant NO stars. Ordered a salad. Received the wrong salad. New salad, wrong dressing. Ordered a burger from their menu, no substitutions, exactly as written on their menu, was brought the wrong burger. Nasty manager Mark should be fired.

    (1)
  • Joe L.

Wasn't impressed. The food was satisfactory and the service was great but it really wasn't anything special

  • Larry Y.

What a wonderul place. Manager Rick was an extraordinary host. You have to visit this place. Wonderful food and atmosphere plus spirits. One of our favorites

  • Bartholemew B.

Only stopped in here for happy hour & beers. A lot of quirky weird things about this place.... - We came in to a half full restaurant and were told it would be a 15 minute wait. There was no one else in line except a woman with a small baby. We told the hostess we would sit at the bar instead. They told us the seat wait included the bar area (???). There were about 12 open stools at the bar. Just weird. - The manager came over to our table multiple times to check on us. The first time is good, the second and third it's a little weird. - The beers were not that great. I realize they don't make their own beers there, but we went across the street to a much better selection. Also, they were out of about 1/2 the beers they offered for happy hour and did not offer any substitutions for the HH special.

Great restaurant with awesome food & service! ! Great view of the plaza from the patio. Will definitely be back

    (5)
  • Shane M.

Thought we'd try this place out since they were one of the few spots with queso listed on the menu. Big mistake. Some of the slowest, pushy-est, worst wait staff ever (Chandal?). Bottom line, bad service and worse queso (had better from a jar).

    (1)
  • Annette C.

Large portions and the staff was very kind. I would definitely come again. I had the trio dip which was amazing. They had great presentations. Very nice place!

  • Diane G.

Great service.. Delicious shrimp fajitas.. Really liked that they serves squash with it! Just the right amount of spice to the shrimp and very fresh... Guacamole and nachos also very tasty.. Margarita was perfect! Nice outdoor balcony too . Lucky enough to hear nice live music nearby at the time!

  • Jenifer P.

We went to The Thunderbird on Fourth of July for just on drink. This bar specializes in tequila so if you are a fan, they have over a hundred bottles to choose from. The place is nice inside with a very long bar. They are located on the second floor and they have a balcony you can sit on to overlook The Plaza. The drinks are a little on the pricy side but the balcony sitting make it worth the costs. The bartender was cordial and made really good mixed drinks. I was only here for about an hour to have a drink but came away impressed with this place, I would definitely stop in again when I go back to Santa Fe.

    (4)
  • Colleen D.

We only had cocktails here but it is a cool place. We started inside because outside was full but made it outside which was a great view of the plaza from the second level. We will come back.

    (4)
  • Diego M.

Great food that is made from scratch, well made margaritas and a great view of the plaza. Can't ask for more!

    (5)

Manager is a pile and food is tasteless. Whoever gives place 5 stars for taste is wrong. There are better places to eat. Just not this one.

we went there at happy hour by accident. It is reasonable price and good food. I really like "The Heat" burger

  • Ricky M.

I came to the Thunderbird cause I was looking to have a few drinks before calling it a night. We decided to stop by Thunderbird since the patio looked nice. Well When we arrived the patio was full so we decided to sit at the bar. The bartender greeted us right away and gave us our drinks right away while time past by our bartender kept telling raunchy jokes to some this might offend people but since we had a few drinks already I thought they were hilarious. As the night went on they got raunchier and raunchier. So to some this might offend people, to others it might entertain as it did for us. Either way in the end we ended up getting free drinks for going along with his jokes so free drinks is always ok in my book.

Recently went to the Thunderbird for lunch and it was a great dining experience. We were greeted by the manager Mark who was very hospitable and accommodating. He seated us and checked in on us periodically throughout the course of the meal along with the other customers. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. I had the classic burger which has Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, and sautéed portabella mushrooms on it. The burger was cooked exactly as ordered. Instead of ordering French fries I had the Lincoln House Salad which had spicy candied walnuts in it which was a nice touch. On my next visit to Santa Fe I will be returning to the Thunderbird Bar & Grill.

  • Lisa T.

Stopped in for lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the great food and friendly staff. We were a party of four and chose to sit on their heated balcony on a very cold day. One of our party ordered chili and proclaimed it to be the best chili he had eaten. The burgers and onion rings were also excellent. The manager was very friendly and thanked us for our patronage. Very classy.

This is a great restaurant. It was a pretty building with great food and excellent service. Our waiter, Antonio, was awesome. I would recommend visiting, and be sure to ask for Antonio. :)

    (5)
  • Robert P.

Stopped in for a bite and hd the green chili stew, it was very good and just right amount of spice. However the service was less than stellar. The stew came with 1 yes 1 flour tortilla when I asked for more I was asked how many since myself and my wife both had stew I said and order please. After a few minutes a plate showed up with 2 tortillas?!? That was an order?!? Really $30 for two bowels stew, a Bloody Mary, and a water and you are gonna get tight in tortillas?!?! Won't be back plenty of other great place next door.

    (2)
  • Bob E.

A nice find. Fish tacos were great. Had a unique pickles red onion on them. I want to go back for more. Oh and a pretty decent beer selection including Arrogant Bastard by Stone Brewing.

  • Carrie N.

I honestly struggled with whether to give this place one or two stars. Why? We won't be back so that should be an automatic one star. However the food was not puke worthy so decided to give it two stars. Let's start w the pros. Great location, especially the outside patio. Looking over the Plaza? Win. Inside, nice ambience. Happy hour prices? Good deal. Cons... Terrible service. I know it was just one waiter but when our drinks took 10 mins to arrive he blamed the bartender. After our drinks arrived, the waiter proceeded to pretend we didn't exist for the next 25 minutes and my wife eventually got fed up enough to walk around the restaurant to flag down this waiter. And this restaurant wasn't even busy. Food... Mixed. Ordered the queso dip and sliders. Queso dip was bland but not Inedible so we polished it off. Sliders- good quality meat yes but fries totally boring. I love fries in any shape and form but those fries tasted like the type you'd find at a low end joint. Even Wendy's fries taste better and that's saying something. Nah. Won't be back.

Walking into this restaurant from the cold outside air we are greeted, or rather not greeted by the hostess. She reluctantly grabbed menus and led us to a table, throwing our menus onto the table. We look over the menu and order and notice that the hostess is sitting again at the front on her phone watching tv. Another group walks in and she again does not immediately stand up and greet them. She is chewing a wad of gum like a f#*!ng cow, handing out more menus to the customers after they sit at the bar. Thank God for the kitchen putting out good food. They saved the place and earned all three of the stars I've given here.

    (3)
  • Donna W.

Stopped in after a history walking tour for an early lunch. Bar tender lacked personality and attention to patrons. His phone was well tended, however. I even tried to engage him, but he didn't bite. Had the nachos. Only ok. Heavy on beans, lite on everything else. It was early. Maybe the dinner crew is better?

    (3)
  • Peter C.

As others have noted, the service is slow. It takes for-ev-ah to get a drink, even when the place is only 1/3 full. And I don't eat the food here other than an appetizer once in a while. You don't come here to eat, or for good service, you come for cocktails on the Plaza, and for that it's fine, even with the slow service. Order your next round when you're only half done with your current drink, problem solved.

  • Jenna J.

Great happy hour!! $5 margaritas (absolutely delicious) and $3 food items including chicken nachos (just ok), chips salsa, sliders etc. Pleasant staff, huge beer, wine and liquor offerings.

Pulled in from Albuquerque and were looking for a real Santa Fe type traditional restaurant. Well, the Thunderbird bar and grill fits the bill. We started with cocktails....chili orange margarita for the wife and bacon Bloody Mary for me. Now the wife is not a drinker and I was unsure if she made the right choice (I did not dissuade her as I would get to finish it). I only got a sip! The Bloody Mary was rich, tasty and loaded with spice and pickled veggies. Lunch was even better. Spinach salad with goat cheese and portobello mushrooms was wonderful. I had the warm chorizo dressing (yes chorizo ) and the wife had the shallot vinaigrette, both great. But the spicy steak soft flour tacos were out of this world. The service was top notch - attentive staff with good water patrol. Sitting on the balcony overlooking the old town square was a perfect finishing touch. A great start on our first day in town.

  • Craig F.

This place is great! The food was amazing and beer prices very nice! I definitely recommend Thunderbird! The heated balcony is great!

    (5)
  • Becca R.

One of the grossest mixed drinks I've ever purchased. It was at least 50% water. Also, the service was really poor. I actually had to ask the bartend to process our check because we were waiting and waiting for him to do it while he appeased his manager. To me there are too many good places in Santa Fe to waste $10 here on anything.

  • Allison T.

Ugh. I hate to agree with the issues with service, but it's true. We wanted to give it a try in spite of the reviews. First night we went: hostess asked our waiter if he could take one more table as we walked past him...he rolled his eyes and mumbled, "I guess" and then proceeded to be a very nice guy throughout the entirety of the meal. Food was average: I got the steak tacos...meh, okay. Beans and rice were bland. Husband got the frito pie and it was quite good. All in all a relative success. Second night: we headed in around 10:15pm due to having just left an event around the corner and we remembered their hours were late (and vague). We got inside the door, the bartender somewhat diplomatically told us they had closed the bar and kitchen, but then proceeded to ask us what we had been planning on ordering as if there was some magical combination he'd be willing to serve us. We answered and he literally ushered us out the door while recommending another restaurant three blocks away. Guess we gave the wrong answer. We were going to give them a second chance that night...but we couldn't. Oh well.

Come for the view don't stay for the food. And please don't get the mole. Very disappointed. Come on Santa Fe you are better than that!

Service is a little slow. Guacamole was a bland dish of avocados. Also, a chilled glass would be nice for the beer. I would visit the Draft Station instead. We wanted outdoor seating to enjoy some food and beverages, but we were disappointed.

The service was adequate, but only just. No one seemed to be happy to be at work. When you're working for tips, you could at least fake it. Even the manager was rather dour. The food was pretty good; my husband and I shared three appetizers -- queso fundido, frito pie, and sliders. My real disappointment is with the bartending. The house margarita tasted like solely fresh lime juice and triple sec. I applaud the use of fresh lime juice, but I don't want it to obliterate the taste of the rest of the drink. So after that, I switched to an old fashioned. After sending my drink back once for tasting like cinnamon (I'm allergic), they made it with a whiskey I'm familiar with but it still tasted spicy. I can only conclude that they put way too much bitters in it. If you manage to screw up a simple margarita and a classic old fashioned, perhaps you're trying to hard to be clever or you need to go back to school.

The gang of 5 went for a walk, and thought we would try this location since it was recommended by the staff at the hotel. The Happy Hour prices we pretty good and the food reasonably priced. Staff was attentive and we took food home so there was plenty to eat and it was very good the next day. that is always a plus. Wish I had tried the Fajitas as the smell of fried onions fill the place and yummy. we will be back on the next trip to Santa Fe. Seems like this place may be under new management as there was a nice added attention flowing thru the place.

Weak, expensive margaritas. Vegetarian unfriendly at best. Because of the location, the view, the history, I want to be a regular, peeping through the trees from the balcony. But I can't. This place is terrible. Although the margaritas are at least made with a neutral and fresh mix, they are half the strength and at least $2 more per drink than my favorites at the Shed and Maria's. Guac, salsa, and chips and a flavorless portabello sandwich are the only options for vegetarians, and they refused to make me fajitas without the meat. Really? Are the fajitas pre made? The waiter said that if I wanted food without meat, I should go somewhere else. Endearing. Sweet. $70+ I spent in an hour and a half, $70+ That I will now not spend there on a weekly basis. But I guess they don't need it. I hope they go out of business and something a bit more pleasant, friendly, fresh and interesting takes their place. A generic menu and space devoid of any sense of place and history; the most underwhelming and disappointing restaurant downtown.

House Margarita at happy hour....weak. tasted like watered-down mixer. Period. Could not detect any alcohol at all. It's a shame, the atmosphere is nice, but we will move on and spend a good amount of cash this evening...elsewhere

One of the best bloody Mary's I've had. Highly recommend stoping by and trying one if your in Santa Fe. The foods great too.

We can only rate the margaritas at this location. We were hoping to go for their happy hour (the only one we found advertised in the area) and sit out on the patio overlooking the Plaza. They only offered dinner on the patio, so we went inside to the bar. $5 house margaritas were weak, and the atmosphere inside was nothing special. On the plus side, our bartender and bar back were very friendly and accommodating.

Excellent food, poor service. Went to the bar waiting on a table, 10 minutes to get a drink. Finally get to the table on the balcony, same thing. 10 minutes to get a glass of wine and order taken. However the food was delicious!

Great chicken mole dinner and guacamole was super fresh and good, service was attentive and very friendly! Thunderbird went out of their way to handle our large crowd of 20 , the location is great overlooking the Plaza and the food is worth the trip!

Nice bar with a balcony overlooking the square however the happy hour margaritas are so watered down its like drinking straight mixer. One was enough for us to exit and spend our happy hour (and money) elsewhere.

We went for happy hour and the margaritas were decent. For $5 I might even say good. It was nice to sit on the patio and look at the plaza, but the $10 guacamole was less than mediocre.

We came here for drinks before heading over to Zozobra. We only had drinks so I can't say anything about the food. Before starting I would like to say, I've eaten at the ore house tons of times, I was expecting better. The" Thunderbird" was an very disappointing experience. The server was inattentive, had no drink knowledge at all, was easily annoyed that we go forbid ask about water after all 4 of us sat with no water for a substantial amount of time. I am personally a server, I know you can get busy, but this guy was bad. Really bad. And I ordered a margarita, tequila was sparse and it tasted watered down. I'm used to drinking amazing margs at other places, so maybe I'm a harsh critic. But my friend ordered a dirty martini, and it literally came out as vodka poured in a rocks glass, not even chilled or garnished. NOT EVEN 1 OLIVE!!!!

Came here the other day during the Spanish Market, and admittedly the only reason we stopped by was to get a drink. Disclaimer: when we got in I was told by some of the people in our party that the food wasn't that great but the drinks are good. That being said, we ordered a round of margaritas and bloody mary's with some chips and salsa with guacamole. I think it literally took 15 minutes to get our drinks out and the same amount of time for the chips and salsa with guac to get to the table, strike 1. The bloody's were good and loaded with fixings but the margaritas were weak, and the guacamole was bland. So much so that I had to kick it up with salt and lime on my own. Bland guacamole in Santa Fe, NM?? No bueno, strike 2. To top it off the service was extremely slow and unattentive...no, it was painfully slow and unattentive. Strike 3, you're out. I'm giving it two stars simply based on location and the fact that I enjoyed the salsa and the bloody mary's. Not a fan other than that. There are too many other quality places to eat and drink in Santa Fe, I wouldn't waste your time at the T-Bird.

I was only given the opportunity to eat here once and it was amazing. I had a salad that had a great balance in their flavors from the blue cheese to the candied walnuts. My friend had a burger and loved it. One of the best meals we had all summer. Service was so so but the place was clean and kept our water glasses full. Worth the extra expense and I would gladly go back.

Let me start by saying the good was pretty good. We had the sliders and 3 dips. The reason for the 2 star review is the nonexistent waitstaff. Drinks were empty for some time and despite being passed by the waitress who looked at the table there was no offer for refills or more drinks. Also had to wait 10+ minutes to get a bill after ring asked if we wanted anything else and our dishes were picked up. Sit at the bar if you come here!!

The atmosphere and location are ideal. Such a beautiful spot for lunch or dinner. If I were the owner or manager I'd get a new hostess though. My friend and I sat right beside the hostess during the lunch rush, and she turned so many people away. The restaurant was not that busy, maybe half full, yet she continued to turn people away. People would ask if they could sit on the patio, she would simply say, "it's full." They would look down and walk out. What she NEVER told anyone is there was another patio, which was empty, with two tables. Those seats were perfect, and beautiful. She also never encouraged them to sit in the perfectly beautiful dining room. One woman came up to her, well after they had been seated and asked if they could sit on the other patio and she said, "Yeah, go ahead." The woman asked why she wasn't offered those tables before, to no reply. My friend and I sat there for over an hour and the other patio table went unused the entire time, even though MANY couples came to ask if they could sit on the patio. I'm sure this hostess turned away at least a dozen potential customers. Maybe I'm missing something but isn't a hostess supposed to be INVITING people in to the restaurant, instead of rudely encouraging them to leave? This girl was around 5 feet tall, with a very young look, maybe she was only 16 years old, and not the adult we presumed a person in this position must be. I'd be furious with her if this was my business. The food was amazing. The wait staff knowledgeable, the cocktails were lovely.

Really good food, but terrible service. Waited 45 minutes for our plates to be cleared after we were done and the check came out wrong. The owner should really see the trend on yelp and change the service.

Wasn't too sure what to expect as I was walking up here. My hopes fell when we were told they were only serving appetizers until the dinner menu started at 5. Being tired and hungry, we all decided what the heck, let's at least sit and grab a drink. What a great decision! The beer was good, the appetizers were fantastic, and the service was prompt and professional. I would definitely return.

A bartender at another establishment recommended this place for a good margarita, and it was so good we came two nights in a row. No simple syrup, not sugary sweet margarita, just an appreciation of the tequila. Larry Mendoza, the bartender, was a font of knowledge about tequila and had hilarious stories. We will be back.

I really was hoping to give this place 5 stars but like so many Santa Fe restaurants it came up short. Was it just a bad day for them? I truly hope someone in management reads this and tries to make some improvements. The atmosphere is the best thing going for the Thunderbird. I like the casual sports bar lay out. This is how things went: Parking was a total pain in the butt. The parking situation is totally adversarial to down town Santa Fe businesses. I do not want to do business in down town Santa Fe ever!!! I know it's not the Thunderbird Grills fault but it is part of the total package. They claim to be able to validate parking. NOT TRUE. I parked at a garage a 1/2 block west and they said no. It was $7.00 to park for just a couple of hours which really topped off the bad experience. The service wasn't very good at first. The server acted as she just wasn't into it. She said she wanted to close out our tab before her shift ended and reminded us of that three or four times making it obvious that it was her priority. Yes, I understand. You want your tip..fine. Her replacement was very good however and the main reason I gave this place two stars. If she was the server the entire time, I think I would have given 4 stars. The beer selection is very good. The food wasn't good. I got the soup and sandwich special that I regretted getting. The Tortilla soup was on the same level as a canned Campbell's type of soup. I would not recommend it and the crab melt was bad as well. Our table also ordered the hot wings. The wings to me were pretty good. Just your traditional type buffalo wings. However, my GF thought they were way too salty and couldn't eat them. My biggest complaint with the wings is that the blue cheese dressing that came with was so watered down it was a pathetic drippy mess. I hate when a restaurant waters down the blue cheese. The blue cheese needs to stick to the wings without dripping off of them. That's not so hard to figure out is it? Anyway, I'm definitely not motivated to return and would not recommend the Thunderbird grill to friends unless they were buying.

With the mixed reviews, I was hesitant to try this place on my birthday, but the price ratio was great. Turns out you don't need to spend ridiculous amounts of money to have a good meal in Santa Fe! Girlfriend said the steak tacos were the best that she's ever had. My Thunderbird steak was good, but not stellar. Could've had more seasoning. The shrimp and red chile cheddar mashed potatoes were awesome! The guacamole starter was also pretty good with a little more lime sprinkled on top. Great happy hour! The margaritas, however, were extremely lacking. We ordered two extra reposado shots to make them any good. Restaurant ideas of "fresh lime juice" are like those neon green bottles that cost $1.50. So sad. So we got the shots and squeezed as much lime as we could into them, and made them formidable. So order more tequila for those damn things. Then again, I make the best margaritas in Northern New Mexico, so I'm sort of a tequila snob. I came here a second time and the their buffalo wing sauce is out-of-this-world good. I'm originally from Upstate NY, so I know good wings. While expensive ($12 for 10 wings), totally worth it. They have just the right amount of spice, and there's some sort of cheesy hint in there (or I could have been hallucinating). I just wish they had some Marble taps because the Marble balcony gets real crowded at night...

Horrible service! Sat outside on the patio during fiestas. We had to wait nearly 30 minutes just to order drinks. Our waitress, Shawntelle, was no where to be found. The buss boy told us she was on break and ended up taking our drink order. Really? Once our waitress finally showed up she was rude and impatient. After our meal I had to get up, track her down and ask for the check. Granted it was busy for fiestas, but management should have added more staff to keep up with the extra crowd. They were clearly understaffed and unable to keep up. The food is pretty good, but the lack of a capable wait staff ruined our experience.

Located on Santa Fe's trendy town plaza, Thunderbird Grill is by all intent and purposes a good choice for an otherwise overcrowded moderately tasteful restaurant town. OVERALL SCORE: Price (you get what you pay for): B+ Service: A- Ambiance / Clientele: A- Location: A Food: B+ My table had: Southwest Cesar: B+ Tortilla Soup: A- Spinach Salad with chicken: B+ Flank Steak with cheese enchiladas: B (sweet potato mash had no flavor). Would I return? Yes! Would I recommend? Probably...servers and staff were knowledgeable about the menu and local events, which is always a plus in my book. Was here on 9/5/12

Great place in sleepy Santa Fe. The Monday night we were there was a pretty slow all over but this place had the best crowd and not surprisingly why. I got the half chicken with risotto and it was very very good, but I had envy over how much everyone raved about the fish tacos. The margaritas were outstanding - some of the best I ever had and, while I didn't try the bacon garnished bloody mary, one of the members of our group did and he liked it . An interesting choice. The green chili mac and cheese was excellent as an appetizer - definitely order that. The salads were also very good. A definite good choice for dinner in the Santa Fe Plaza.

Ordered veggie wrap to go. Sounded great on the menu. Squash, spinach cheese etc. perfect for my drive back to CO. Enjoyed a good IPA at the bar while I waited. Excited sports fans yelling, booing and cheering. Ate soggy, greasy wrap in car, fell apart in my hands dripping w grease. It wasn't wrapped at all. Don't know how they made a veggie wrap so greasy. I feel gross now.

I am a very big fan of Thunderbird. They have a HUGE selection of tequilas, beers, and custom cocktails. The food is delicious and there is a lot of variety in the choices. I had the Shrimp Pasta which was yummy, I also really liked their queso. The newly remodeled restaurant is very open and airy. The patio is a great place to go and people watch! I have to say that my favorite drink was the Watermelon Margarita made with their homemade watermelon infused tequila. The staff is always very nice and attentive. I highly recommend checking this place out!

This place went way out of there way to accommodate a friend of mine and myself when we recently stopped in here. The atmosphere is just awesome. It's very nice but comfortable on the inside. They have two patio's you can sit on, one overlooking the square which provides great views. The other overlooks the street, is much smaller and would be a great seat if there with your significant other. The fish taco's were some of the best that I've ever had. The fish had a great texture and every aspect of the meal was very fresh. You could tell the tortillas had just been made. Fantastic. We were looking for cigars for after dinner and the host/manager went out of their way to get us the name of a place close by and provided us written directions to get there. This place has everything going for it, and the prices were very fair. I would absolutely go here again!

After shopping around Santa Fe Plaza we decided to stop for some drinks at the cool looking bar on the second floor balcony. Their Margaritas were fairly good. it was very relaxing to sit on the balcony in the cool evening breeze listening to a band play in the plaza. The guacamole that came with our nacho plate was possibly the best guacamole I have ever had. My husband was hungry for sushi so we did not have dinner here. As we were walking out the smell and look of the food on dinners plates was very enticing. Next time we return to Santa Fe I will make sure I stop to sample their dinners.

Admittedly this wasn't a recommendation for our visit to Santa Fe but a chance introduction...we stumbled upon this bar/restaurant and had the best meal I've had since I've been in Santa Fe. I had the chicken mole risotto with steamed broccoli with an Argentina Malbec...absolutely wonderful!! My co-worker had the green chile stew and the warm spinach salad with chicken and he was equally impressed. Would highly recommend for a laid back, good food, night! Enjoy!!

The waitstaff and beer selection are excellent. However, the food doesn't have a lot of flavor, and the seating arrangements on the balcony are very awkward. In an attempt, I assume, to squeeze more people onto the balcony, they have tables that are so close together it's like you are sitting at the same table. I kept thinking I should introduce myself, since I could hear every word they were saying.

Pricy like most everything on the plaza in Santa Fe. Service was very good on the Saturday evening/late afternoon we dined there. Food is nothing special, but nothing bad about it. Nice venue, we sat inside, but the balcony/porch would be a nice place to have a cocktail, weather permitting.

  • Natalie S.

I had the chicken tortilla soup and it was pathetic. It was like eating something that had basically no taste and honestly got tired of eating it. The two other people with me did not enjoy their food either. One of them had the nachos and it was just grease. And the other had a house burger that was unsatisfactory. The hint that it's not any good is that there's like nobody in the eating area inside. I definitely do not recommend this place if you enjoy eating good food.

Huh... This place was totally off my radar after the Ore House became "Balconies" (which was terrible)... I have been neglectful in my downtown restaurants I guess. First off, the service was quite nice... It was a Friday night and not too filled up with patrons, probably because it was 9 degrees outside and Santa Feans tend to hibernate once the temperature drops below 20 degrees... We had one main server and a couple other side servers, one of whom I recognized from the SFCC's culinary program, which is also quite stellar. I tried a few menu options; The green chile mac and cheese which was very good, and the steak soft tacos which was awesome.... There's free WiFi, which puts this restaurant up another notch in my book, and in Santa Fe, which has really weird alcohol pouring laws... The bartenders seemed to know how to make their customers happy. Dinner and a couple of drinks for under $50 including the tip? Well that's better than a lot of other places in this expensive city. I'm a fan, and I'll defiantly go back.

A good American food alternative when you're sick of Mexican food and green chile cheeseburgers. Decent selection of draught beers too, for NM. Friendly bartenders. Also nice TVs to watch the Cowboy game on.

Surprized that my old favorite, the Ore House, has been replaced in the location on the plaza. The Thunderbird Bar and Grill just opened in the location. Still they have the wonderful balcony to eat at overlooking the square. I had a wonderful lunch trying both the house margarita and prickly pear margarita. Both very tasty. I guessed their specialty is burgers, they sound great, but I wanted tacos, I had the Steak tacos, quite tasty and filling. Their red rice and beans were a bit lack luster, but I was full from the tacos anyway. The service was friendly, attentive and fun. I hope to be back soon and will try their burgers.

Good place to grab a bite or spend the afternoon on the Plaza. My girlfriend and I stopped here for a late lunch and she had the "Hangover" burger which included a fried egg. I had the Green Chili Mac and Cheese. It was alright, but the portion was not as large as I was expecting after being assured it was a good-sized portion by the waiter. The beer selection was quite good, so that was a redeeming quality. All in all I found it just a touch pricey for what you got. I'd return, but only if I couldn't find anything better nearby.

We wandered into this restaurant because we wanted to eat outside on their porch. Service was very quick and efficient. Pew. Awful experience. A nice hostess greeted us at an outside stand that only had stairs. We needed the elevator to accomodate my mother in her late 60's and the stroller my kid was in. The girl led us around a corner, down an alley with a bank of trash cans in it to an old elevator that opened into the kitchen of the restaurant. This is a hazard. Waitstaff was nice. The menu had no prices on it, except to say that adding certain items to sandwhiches would be an extra buck. The food was beyond mediocre; not worth the $56 bucks lunch cost the three of us(no alcoholic beverages) The restrooms were not equipped to change a child's diaper either. I realize that not everyplace is for children and act accordingly, but a place should not advertise being family oriented if they are clearly not. Total disappointment--should have gone to the pizzeria across the plaza.

  • Maria E.

RUN AWAY! Enchiladas taste like El Torito--everything out of a can. My poblano stuffed chicken breast was NOT a chicken breast. It was a chicken wing with 3 bites of white meat attached to it. I took my plate back to the kitchen and asked the chef exactly what kind of chicken breast was made up mostly of a chicken wing--priced at 21 dollars... I was told that is was a "winged breast"--something I have never heard of. Basically they are ripping people off by charging people for a breast when when a glorified chicken wing is served. Service was excellent, but I think the chef has been told to cut costs by exchanging the listed cuts of meat for the cheaper ones---and think we're too stupid to know because we're from out of town. I really feel ripped off tonight. I hope I can prevent this from happening to you.

Went with a friend for lunch during Restaurant Week and it was very mediorce. Our waiter didn't speak english & screwed up the order, disappeared after serving the entrees and overcharged us for our beer flight. The hostess was no help, pleading that they were "busy"- but the restaurant was only half-full. The only savior was the bartender who delivered our beers that had been sitting- he made some nice suggestings and gave us some tastes. As for the food- there were no bright or fresh flavors, everything was well cooked but quite bland. Being a foodie and a local maybe I expect more from a meal out, but nothing here made me want to return.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
